Oil filter question

I recently had a major oil leak fixed. Turned out to be the front main seal. A joker up here (Chicago) wanted to charge $350.00 to replace it as well as "clean out" my plenum/air intake assembly. He said the reason for my leak was that this was all clogged up and my engine couldn't "breath" and that I was using a crap oil filter. He tells me that the genuine filter has a pressure release valve that releases oil pressure on startup and that my filter was the primary cause of the leak. Does this make any sense? I know all about the anti-drain back valve, but what's this pressure release crap? I have always thought this guy was a schiester, but my extended warranty always paid him. Now that I no longer have one I don't want to deal with a crook. BTW, I got the seal job done on vacation for about $140.00.

Daniel,

I always use a K&N and just bought a new Filtermag. https://www.expeditionexchange.com/filtermag/

I also have used synthetic oil since I've owned the truck. Mobil One after getting tired of trying to source an Amsoil dealer close by. Might clean out your system a bit.

Who did you take your truck to in Chicago?

I go with a K&N on our disco and D90. I don't know how the plenum chamber would cause an oil leak, that sounds fishy to me, but I don't know everything, that's for sure. I would get a second opinion with any big work though.

If it helps. Get an oil filter for a 94 explorer. it will fit except it is a lot larger

Motorcraft FL-1A
AC-Delco PF-2
Napa 21515 (& others)

I don't buy the line about the plenum causing the problem. Front crank seals leak-fact of life after a few miles.

The part costs what, $10? It couldn't possibly take three hours to replace the seal-the factory manual even suggests how to do it in-situ.

The part was $20.00. I always ask for a filter w/the anti-drain-back valve when I go to Murray's.
Eric,
I took it to Lakeshore something or another on 5400 block of N Broadway. I think he knows his stuff. The work has always been done well, but like I said I think he inflates the work job thinking I'm a complete YUPPIE. ALways saying stuff like "Are you working on this YOURSELF?"
Thanks all,
Daniel

Daniel,

Cool. There's a Rover shop off of willow that is a nightmare. Stay away from that place..

Yea, If you go in there and let this guy know that you know your $#!^ he might not hose you. Just don't play dumb or you'll get the shaft. OR, go and play dumb and see if you ever want to go back.

BTW, just realized why I couldn't find this in the Discovery section. This has all been in relation to my 98 D1-not a Defender (unfortunately).
