I removed my air intake hose and found some oil in my throttle body?? Anyone know how this can happen. I'm stumped. I do have an motor oil leak, which I think is coming from my oil cooler plugs.:ack:

No I haven't. Explain cleaned?

It's what you do to things that are dirty, that shouldn't be.

Carb cleaner and a tooth brush is how I do it. Some people remove them so that there isn't a bunch of smoke after cleaning.

Call me stupid. But I wasn't aware that a TB needed to be removed and cleaned? I always keep my engine & it's surroundings pretty clean, besides my oil leak. I guess I'm still not understanding where the oil is coming from?

The oil seperator on the valve cover is vented to the intake system just upstream of the throttle body. As there are crankcase gases released inside the engine they are sucked out of the valve cover and into the inake and burned to reduce emissions. Sometimes oil residue will build up in the throttle body, usually leaving a black carbon like deposit. In some cars this can cause a stuble at idle or when coming off idle. You can remove the intake tube, use the throttle cable to open the butterfly and use carb cleaner and a toothbrush to clean it. Any carb cleaner that gets inside will smoke on startup, it's normal.

This is pretty standard operating procedure with just about ANY modern vehicle these days.

I modified my motorcycle to make use of a "Catch Can" and this has led to a very clean and reliable TB. My boat however just pukes into the bilge. My BMW does a better job of mixing it with air and I dont get much of a mess on the 8 individual throttle bodies. I would like to modify the Disco to use a catch can as well since half of it pukes into the engine bay.

When does this need to be done? Every 6 months? Year?

I do all my cars yearly - in the spring when I change air filters, spark plugs, etc.

My old Suburban had idle issues with the varnish build up, but a once a year clean up solved it.
