i just cleaned my oil pick-up and pan out a few weeks ago (oil light flickering occasionally @ idle). i just used some high temp red silicone gasket maker, used it on the diffs too. the gasket that was on the oil pan when i took it off was just black silicone, no cork or anything. i was sort skeptical about mud and water for a few days, but all is well, just make sure that you use enough of the stuff, not enough means trouble. also - if you do pull your oil pan clean out your oil pick-up while you're in there - solved my flickering oil light.

Both dealers by me use 'The Right Stuff' and I did the same. Easy and not messy.
Just be sure if you purchase the pressurized can, that it actually works before you go home with it. I purchased a can and got home and the nozzle was defective! Yes, oil pan was sitting on my bench and me without any means of getting back to that stupid store!!!

Right Stuff, and I have a few spares.

Whatever you use, put on a healthy SMOOTH bead, then let it skin over for ~5min before installing it. That'll give it enough strength to keep a film between the metal surfaces, which will make it last a lot longer before it leaks again. (It is a British engine! ;))

Can any of these products be on items like valve covers etc.....I would assume they could if being used for oil pans but I've never tried them?

Yes, they can be & are by some. I don't use anything on valve covers or Bosch oil pan gaskets, but RightStuff does work well on Bosch front oilpan studs, rear oilpan bolts (the recessed ones), and all intake end seals.
