Oil Preference

What is the choice of oil that anyone can recommend nowadays? I have an 03' Disco 2 that has 38K miles on it. I used Mobil One synthetic in my previous vehicles and Castrol Syntec. I just ordered the upgraded KNN filter from Atlantic British.

I had the Disco serviced about two months ago and noticed a oil drip from the filter. I took it to have the lift kit installed and the mechanic said that the drip was from excess oil that filled the lip that snugs up to the housing. It is still dripping and it bothers me. It's not making it on the driveway but it's visible on the the undercarriage.:banghead:

Thanks!

Just swapped fluids for a trip from VA up through WV to NY to Canada, and back down via Jersey shores and the DelMarVA... 1,600 total miles over 8 days. Used Mobile 1 Synthetic and Mobile 1 filters.

Not a single problem, and she's still purring. (knock knock knock knock - wheel's probably just fell off though)

cancel the K&N order... it'll ruin your MAF and you won't notice any changes from paper filters. ask me how i know.

It's the KNN oil filter not air filter. I won't use the air filter- too much of a headache using the recharge kit etc. I tried this with one of my former cars. Thanks for the warning. It has an anti-drainback valve that is suppose to separate it from most filters making it a premium filter. I don't think that this will affect the Disco at least I hope not.

i never get tired of saying this-

my 96 has 243k miles on it. it was an extreme daily driver and offroad vehicle up until last month when i bought another one. i used a good Wix filter and napa oil almost the entire time ( since 80k miles), but always 3k mile intervals.

its not what brand, its regular changing. i did notice that mobil clean 5000 burned alot faster than napa or valvoline, i always had to add oil when i used that for some reason.

You are right but full synthetics usually give you longer intervals between changes.

Just an FYI, yes synthetics do give you longer intervals by reducing the viscosity breakdown. However, with these trucks it isnt the break down that is the problem, it is dirty oil. These engines run very dirty, almost like diesel engines. 5k miles is probably the longest you want to go between oil changes.

FWIW - I run either Mobil 1 0w40 or 15w50. The 0w40 supposedly has a greater detergent property than the other mobil 1 synthetics. I have thought about using the Rotella T synthetic. But as much as I change my oil, it probably doesn't matter.

I use the K&N long OIL filter too.

granted, but what did it for me was looking inside my dads '00 5 series at the alarming amount of sludge in the engine. like a shitload of it. he does the mobil synthetic 10k mile thing. to me, it just makes more sense to be safe with a 3k mile regular oil change on these old things. synthetics just arent the miralce oil that people think they are. i would use them on axles and stuff as a lifetime oil, but only if it doesnt encounter mud and water. because then it has to be changed anyway. this is beaten to death and no one wins, i'll get off my soap box now

ANY decent oil is fine...I use 10:40 viscosity for mine....changing it out is the key...Rover motors are notorious for sludge...which will eventually kill them.

Castrol 10W30 or 10W40 and LR genuine oil filters. Changed every 2000 to 2500 miles religiously. Vehicle is used 75% off-road so oil get's dirty quick especially in E. WA where trails are dusty 9 months of the year. 1999 DII

I like to go with the oil that is easiest to wash off the drive way!

No, really I use 10W30 Castroil Syntec (full synthetic)

Anyone use Amsoil? I've heard mixed opinions

thats a ford explorer filter, among others. do elaborate. why that one opposed to the wix filter called for? 51068 or something

1. It fits.
2. And the 51068 is never in stock.
3. And I'm too lazy to get the filter from one store and the oil from another.

fair enough. the filter is much bigger, i imagine thats an advantage. i wonder if it has any pressure ramifications
