Oil pump failure caused by thrust face failure

Good day, folks,

We have an unusual failure in the Robison Service shop this morning. A 2003 Disco came in with intermittent loss of oil pressure. We pulled the front cover and found the outer oil pump gear cracked. That was not too surprising as I've had three 4.6 motors this past year fail from similar oil pump breakage.

We pulled the oil pan to check the bearings, and to my surprise, we found the thrust face laying in the sump. The bearings just had ordinary wear and tear for 110,000 miles otherwise. I don't know why the thrust face would fail in an auto trans rig, but it's only half the bearing shell (cheap cheap) and that may have actually set it up for failure.

Once again we find a new mode of failure that we never saw on the older Land Rover engines. These motors really went downhill as the tooling wore out at the end.

With this failure we have damage to the crank from banging against the block, so we either have to repair the crank and block, or replace the whole thing. This particular job is for an extended warranty company who will probably choose a motor

Anyway it's one more thing to check when you service your rig - any excess play at the crank pulley gives this away.

John I follow your logic but couldent the cracked oil pump ring and resultant oil starvation cause the thrust face to overheat gaul and then fail?

maybe this is a example of what happens when you continue to operate a motor that has had the oil ring fail because of the poor specs on the front cover location?

Either way its pretty clear the tooling was just worn out as these last couple years of blocks suffer from so many issues related to poor machine work.
