Oil Pump GeRotor

I am building up an engine for my '96 disco.
Before the old engine "threw a rod" and disintegrated the oil light was coming on at low RPM whilst sitting in traffic.
One of the few parts of that engine that is salvageable in the front engine cover with the oil pump.
The GeRotor looks good to me but I am thinking that whilst I have everything apart, perhaps I should R&R to new rotors.
This GeRotor was replaced when I did bearing and ring replacement last time. It has an estimated 30K Miles

Any recommendations?

There not too expensive but if there’s signs of wear change out pump gears since it’s apart and check out front cover for inside wear as well.

So the old engine blew up because of low oil pressure. And you're considering using the thing responsible for oil pressure on your new engine ?

I hope you’re not saving the scary questions for Halloween!! Lol.

I suppose the question is what caused the low oil pressure. A clogged oil pick up, for example, wouldn’t mean the oil pump gears or housing is bad, Regardless, take some measurements and that will tell you if the pump gears or housing is done, or reusable.

Agree 100%. I’m sure he will flush the lines/cooler etc in case there’s anything inside from when the engine died.

$100 for a new pump would be cheap insurance and the best advice in case the other one has a problem that isn’t real visible. Upgrading things when you have the opportunity is rarely a bad decision.

But right, wrong or indifferent, that’s just how I think about things.

The low oil pressure light was very transient and only occurred at low rpm (idle). I don't think it was the cause of the piston rod breaking.
The oil pump gears look good but something was causing the occasional low oil press. light

No. This was not a cause and effect. I doubt the transient low pressure light was the cause of the broken rod.

I found some damage to the gerotor. There is some damage to the splines that attach to the crankshaft. A while back the harmonic balancer broke apart. That is probably what caused this.
Also, there is some galling to the backplate of the oil pump but it seems fairly shallow.
I have a spare but it is in about the same condition and has a spot of rust at the 2 oclock position.
It looks like I will have to buy new gerotors.

New cover assemblies are still available.

The listing says it’s for a Discovery 2. The one listed for a D1 is twice the price. Anyone know the difference? Looking at the photos it looks like the only difference is the oil pressure sensor type and location but it appears you could use either location.. Also the D1 version uses studs for the oil pan. Anyone know more?

The sump comes in on the bottom of the cover on the Bosch engine.probably the oil cooler ports are different also

I think if you can feel any of that scoring when you drag a fingernail across it it’s junk. Same rule on crankshaft journals. I’ve been looking around for one. At first I thought you were goofy not being able to find one. But your right, I can’t find one.

I wonder how different the front cover for an old Buick would be. I think they ran them in the mid 70’s. It was a 262 V8
It uses the external pump driven by the camshaft/distributor. Well, assuming it is the same as the 215 V8.
