Anyone who says a Pontiac Grand Am was 'was built for me' is a deranged lunatic.

Other than that, I liked the article. Especially the story about the guy whose dog was the only who'd ride with him in his old Volvo.

I bought a brand new car in '98. I did it all on my own, and was the first "nice thing" I had owned. I had that car through trials and tribulations for 13yrs. The day it drove away I had a slight twinge of emotion... until I looked at the cash in my hand.

It's a car. I am a car-nut through and through, but not one vehicle in my history has ever stood out as something broke my heart to sell/scrap.

I guess I don't garden or go to coffee shops or a libertarian.....

My 'new' car is 10 years old. I plan on keeping it until it's at least 15. The vehicle I'd replace it with is also 8-10 years old at this point. We'll have to see which of my cars dies first and what's available to replace it with at that time.
In the mean time, what I'd pay for a car payment is going in the bank for future repair costs.

Ive owned my D2 for 7yrs. Ive spent more on it than I want to think about!! So much that keep saying "Im never getting rid of it" I hope this remains true 10 yrs from now, but Im a realist.. and not rich so at some point I may have to say goodbye to it.

Yep, my dd is a 2004 Saab convertible I bought new in Tulsa, OK which fits right in here with its 2.0 turbo engine. Just turned 17k miles today driving home from work. Will use and probably sell before heading back as worth more here than in the US.

Other cars are bought and sold, but I've no intention of letting my DII go. It does have a name, but it was simply the thought that crossed my mind when I sat outside after I bought it and closely observed the paint color.

I wish I hadn't sold my Nissan 720. I didn't realize how much I liked it until it was gone.

I don't drink coffee, though, and I'm a horrible gardener.

Cheers,

Kennith

That and s-10 blazer's , you ain't fucking joking.

I enjoy owning and driving "old" cars, but if i didn't do all the work myself shit would get expensive.

I buy a new motorcycle every other year or so.

I've gotten frustrated with the upkeep of 2 200k+ Discoveries, went and looked at new cars and got sick. I'll keep these 2 running until they are stolen or really totalled (unlike the previous 2 times).

New 4wd Disco alternatives have horrible blind spots, bulbous plastic bumpers, crap suspension, no ground clearance, and HVAC that require reading the manual to operate. F that. You can also trace the roots of many of the parts on a series 1 and 2 disco back to a series 1 Land Rover. The frames are even similarly dimensioned. Not so much with the new ones.

Still own the first car I bought in the US, a Primrose yellow 68 MGB with a 2.1 Oselli engine etc etc.
Only just said goodbye to my RR after 14years and 200K miles.:applause: I actually think my son and a couple of his friends who had joined us on various trips were more emotional about seeing the faithful old friend leave for the last time.

Great article, I can certainly relate. My newest car is a 2000 Excursion, my oldest (and favorite) is my 1990 Miata which I have owned for about 15 years and 200k miles. All of my cars, except the Disco, have well over 200k on them. I expect to own all of them for years to come, except maybe my commuter Subaru that may not make it more than another year or so. Might even throw a new motor in it when the time comes, who knows. But this is one of those cars that nobody will ride in or drive except me. My wife refuses to drive it.

I enjoy older cars, easier to work on, more fun without all of the electronic shit making you a passenger more than a driver. I could afford a new or newer car but I'm happy with what I have and enjoy cheap insurance and no car payment.

The only one car I really miss, a 94' E500 Mercedes I sold a few years back. I often find myself looking at older MB's for sale. One of these days I will buy one.

If it does what you need then why replace it?

My 72 MGB has been in the family since 72, my dad gave it to me in 92. It's going through a rolling restoration now. I added the 110 back in Nov. I have a 2000 Saab Wagon, but once I get a few more things squared away on the B and 110 it's going away and those two will be my drivers.

My wife's ML320 is a 2000 and we have owned it since 2003 and it's not going anywhere it's in great shape reliable, paid for, wife loves it etc...

Most all the newer cars seem to be use, abuse sell and forget. I prefer cars that were made for the duration.

And that's why my daily driver is the first car I ever bought new: a 1972 Land-Rover
