I have towed my 2002 d2 all over by putting the transfer case in neutral and the trans in park... I recently was in Page Az going down to Flagstaff and didn't properly check that my transfer case was really in neutral... Well it wasn't and I burned up my transmission. I am now looking for a used 2002 d2 transmission if anyone has one. I have also changed my proceedure to include proving my transfer case is in neutral by putting ttruck back into drive with the engine running and trying to move it before going to park and shutting the engine off. I would appreciate any thoughts you all my have.
Thanks

.........geez.....whatever it costs, cant help but feel like a friggin genius...just hope you only have to do the transmission, not the tranny, transfer case, front and rear diffs and more...also, you really shouldnt be towing it like that at all, just spend a lil more, get a trailer you can flat tow it with, instead of playing russian roulette with the tranny...

No I didn't feel any more resistance which is a supprise to me also, In the past if I didn,t get the Tcase in neutral I'd litreally slide the wheels acreoss the ground. I went to LR of Albuquerque and they were the ones that diagnosed the problem...I asked them if I had done anything wrong and they said no I had everything right in fact they have dozens of rovers out being towed this way regularly with no problems... No the problem is I did it wrong.

I had exactly the same experience the very first time I flat towed my DII behind our motorhome. I was just driving about five miles to see how everything worked. The problem was thet the trensfer case neutral light was not telling the truth... and I was stupid enough not to put the thing in gear to check it.

Five miles cost $3,000 for replacement transmission. Lucky to find one with only 8oo miles on it at a LA shop. The trans still worked after the tow, but would not start out unless the shifter was in low. After I got going, all was well until I stipped the truck completely. Then I'd have to go to low again to get it moving. Sprag clutches apparently blew up.

The LA shop was British Car Service. 310-216-3400. They dismantle Rovers and usually have transmissions. You might even get mine with new guts!!

I've had call to tow a lot of Land Rovers over the years. I never do it without putting it on a trailer, or at the least a tow dolly and disconnecting the rear prop shaft at the diff. My two cents.

try roverlandparts, they normally have some in stock at a good price - like 1,250

OK Here is how it turned out... I got a trans and transfer case from john at tidewater, They really helped with all the details and couldn't have been better to work with. I got the trans and transfer case from a d2 with 20k miles on it for $1500.00 It was shipped to Laf La. where my trans man resealed both units did the maintenance and installed them. his cost was $715.00 so I got away with $2200.00. the new trans works perfectly
but I still needed to remove the console and cover and repair the wiring damaged by the heat. I completed that myself and replaced 2 bad coil paks and both front O2 sensors and finally got all the codes cleared. Ive driven it over the weeked since I made the last repair and everything is normal.
Thanks for all your input
