Ran an Optima n my toy for over 5years with not an issue, used to drive it a couple of blocks on the starter when I ran out of gas (did this multiple times). Just put one in my Disco last month. I am a firm believer in previous experience and mine has been great with the Optimas.
Go ahead and tell me about your battery blowing up and burning your Rover down but I'll believe it was bad acessory wiring over a bad battery.
It seems the problem with Optima is quality control. Some have great batteries, some have crap batteries.
As for wiring, mine is fine. The batteries were treated the best they possibly could have been, I even squeezed more life out of them when they started crapping out. My wiring setup cost more then the batteries to put together, and I constructed it from the absolute best materials available. I don't mess around in that regard.
Even with my wonderous wiring and maintanance, one of them started getting mighty hot toward the end and building up pressure. I had two yellowtops wired in perfect parallel, same age, purchased at the same time, and precisely the same state of charge when installed. They were connected together with 1 guage oxygen free copper cable, with 4700 strands, terminated at the lugs with the best terminals available at the time. The wire length was the same beyond a milimeter of precision. Grounded with a very nice 35.00 puck to proper metal and the same 1 guage wire. The positive connections were made in the same flawless fashion. The electricity could have had no complaints.
So, no wiring problems here.
They were kept clean 100 percent of the time, and mounted securly in a battery tray that fit them like a glove. If I hit a mudhole, I popped the hood and cleaned them off.
They are now doorstops for the outdoor shed.
I'm not saying that some people don't have great Optimas, I'm saying some people don't.
Cheers,
