I'd examine other options before messing with Optimas.

EE sells one that is probably a great choice. It's made by Odyssey.

There is also the Exide Orbital.

I put a Group 31 Blue Top in mine. You can't beat 900 CCA.

I have been using Optimas for years with no problems. I don't want to start a debate, I'm just saying.

Spend the few dollars more and go with the yellow top.
I've never had a problem with Optimas. Had/have yellow tops in every Rover I've owned/currently own (aside from the Freelander which has a Red Top) without a single issue.

Yellow top is deep cycle -- not ideal for starting or winching. Optima must have had a QC problem at some point. I've been using them for years, never had a problem. I put one in a Montero in 1997, my brother bought it from me a few years ago and the battery finally lost a cell and died last month -- 10 years...

I have been running 2 yellow tops for 3 years now without issue....handled by a wrangler power manager and fed by a mean green 200amp alternator...Never missed a beat with my set up...

FWIW, my red top crapped-out on me in just over a year. No winch, off road lights, fridge, etc... This POS just had to turn the starter and light up the headlights once and while.

I guess lasting only a year in this desert heat isn't unheard of for a battery but for what it cost me I expected much better.

I've heard great things about the Odyssey.

Most Optimas are dual purpose, starting and deep cycle.

Ran an Optima n my toy for over 5years with not an issue, used to drive it a couple of blocks on the starter when I ran out of gas (did this multiple times). Just put one in my Disco last month. I am a firm believer in previous experience and mine has been great with the Optimas.

Go ahead and tell me about your battery blowing up and burning your Rover down but I'll believe it was bad acessory wiring over a bad battery.

I run a red top for starting and a yellow for winch & lights.
Been good for 4 years now.
Velocewest, why would you say not to run deep cycle for winching?
Deep cycle is ideal for any kind of long pull like that.

Are your batteries separated by an isolator of some type?

I have talked to the people at Optima and they recommend the Yellow top deep cycle/starting batteries for winching.

It seems the problem with Optima is quality control. Some have great batteries, some have crap batteries.

As for wiring, mine is fine. The batteries were treated the best they possibly could have been, I even squeezed more life out of them when they started crapping out. My wiring setup cost more then the batteries to put together, and I constructed it from the absolute best materials available. I don't mess around in that regard.

Even with my wonderous wiring and maintanance, one of them started getting mighty hot toward the end and building up pressure. I had two yellowtops wired in perfect parallel, same age, purchased at the same time, and precisely the same state of charge when installed. They were connected together with 1 guage oxygen free copper cable, with 4700 strands, terminated at the lugs with the best terminals available at the time. The wire length was the same beyond a milimeter of precision. Grounded with a very nice 35.00 puck to proper metal and the same 1 guage wire. The positive connections were made in the same flawless fashion. The electricity could have had no complaints.

So, no wiring problems here.

They were kept clean 100 percent of the time, and mounted securly in a battery tray that fit them like a glove. If I hit a mudhole, I popped the hood and cleaned them off.

They are now doorstops for the outdoor shed.

I'm not saying that some people don't have great Optimas, I'm saying some people don't.

Cheers,

Kennith
