The best cameras are obviously going to be the pro cameras. I had some semi-pro cameras with Sony superHAD 1/4" CCD sensors. They worked well down to almost zero light. Analog output.

There's much newer stuff now that's probably better. IP with POE, local storage, etc. I bought my original stuff from http://www.surveillance-video.com. They're out of NY. Maybe they'll have a package deal with cameras and dvr.

Just bought a NightOwl Pro system with 8 cameras (2 of them record audio) 1Tb recording, internet connectivity, remote view from PC's, tablets, or smart phones. $480.

Great image quality.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at the lorex systems and ran across night owl. I know that you really have to spend 1k plus for a solid system but $500 is about my limit for what I think I need.

Thanks for all of the replies!

Go on the night owl site, I have a 20% off coupon, or call them, they are pretty good and will help you decide on a perfect system for your needs

Just get better cameras than what the banks use. Ever seen that shitty image quality posted on the news after a bank gets robbed? There is no way to tell who the person is doing the heist.

I have the Sony HAWK-II cameras. Image quality is pretty good. They are an IR camera which I'd recommenced. These are all indoor. My outdoor cameras are Nuvico (sp??) with IR. Image quality on this camera is not as good as the Sony's.

As for DVR's, one is probably as good as the other. Mine is PC based and uses a BIT software system. DVR's have come a long way since I installed this system so the features I was looking for at the time are now available in a standard DVR.

i have a first alert DVR with 8 inputs (analog). running 5 nightowl 30LED IR 1/4CMOS outdoor cams. 1tb HDD, networked. image quality is good during daylight, acceptable at night up to about 20 feet. thought about adding some IR floods around the outside but never got around to it. probably have $375 into it? i had the hdd.

most of this was purchased on newegg or tiger. cant remember.

My neighbors have ADT Security signs.
I have this:

The signs seem to do the trick.
Not living in a ghetto probably helps, too.
