Heck, if it were mine I'd probably buy it back and just drive it like that (unless there is a safety issue with the damage) until I got around to fixing it. It looks mostly cosmetic. And as someone said, it's a great trail rig. Heck, chop off the top, remove the doors etc, and make it a "real" trail rig.

I just bought a lightly rolled 95 D1 for $1,600 CDN. I run an ad in the local classifieds stating I will buy any wrecked, bent, bashed, burned, written off Land Rovers and we ussually get our hands on 3-5 D1's a year for anywhere from $1,000 - $3,000. I get at least 2-3 calls per week, and its a great way to find the replacement parts you would need to rebuild that truck. I have the parts you need but I'm in Canada..land of the taxes.

I'd keep it part out the crap stuff like those jump seats, cd player, light gaurds, and any other useless componentss, you'll get around $400 bucks for the jump seat in a flash. A turn it into a off roader...but hey thats my crazy opinion.

BTW since it was an insurance claim your paper work might be no good. I'm not sure how it works in the US but up here if the title isn't clean, or if the trucks been reported a write off getting the thing back on the road is a paper work battle. If your going to rebuild you'll want to keep receipts for all the parts you buy and pictures of the rebuild step by step, if not they'll think you stole a truck and then they have to match all the numbers on your rig and have someone from the ministry of transport check it over...

You might be able to negotiate a settlement where they don't total it, but they cut you a check for the max amount before they'd have to consider it totalled. That way you don't buy it back, you just keep it and take a check. They get out easier that way and your truck keeps a clean title. You may want to ask what that amount might be- it might not be that much different than taking a check for market value, then buying it back.

As said before... fix it up into a trail rig. It will be fun and you will get to know your truck even better. If not... part it out yourself and make a few $$

The core question is do you the time/space/ability to part the rig yourself? If the answer to any of those questions is no, then don't bother thinking about it. You can make decent coin parting a rig, but you've really got to stay on top of it, pull the parts, answer a billion e-mails, box and ship stuff promptly.

IMO, unless you don't have a job and/or are looking to make a bit of money and goof around taking a vehicle apart, parting is probably not worth it.

I bought mine back, and turned it into this:

It was fun chopping off the top http://www.redbirdsra.com/discoconv.htm

I ended up selling it for a bit less than I bought it back for. The new owner was planning on fitting a 109 body and stuff on it. Not sure if it ever happened.

In hindesight, I would have let them have it and put the extra $$$$ in my pocket, but i had fun converting it into a yard machine.

I have located a 95 with a bunch of miles and has some issues, but a perfect body for about $2,600.
