...anybody know anything about them? I'm considering building an outrigger and sail for my canoe, to give it some extra range and seaworthiness.

While I'm sure I could just wing it and make something usable, but I have a lot of questions about float size/proportion to the main hull, length of the arms, depth of floats, position of the floats fore/aft, etc. I guess what I really need is a good book or website on the subject, so any recommendations would be more than welcome. I've just not really been able to find much on the subject so far without shelling out $$$.

I've got a lot of ideas on how to affix it to the boat, brace it, tie it, etc, and I've even got some ideas for floats with shallow keels so I can avoid having a leeboard or centerboard.

I've BEEN googling this... there's a lot of absolute crap out there (people like me just winging it), and some extremely high end stuff about racing etc - its been hard to find what I'm ACTUALLY looking for - info on proportion, positioning, etc.

Extra range? Seaworthiness? What kind of trip are you planning? Re-enactment of the voyage of Kon-Tiki? It's a canoe! If you want to cruise down to the Keys or up to Nantucket then you'll have a much more enjoyable trip in a sailboat.

I can just see the news article in the Post:

"Man Rescued At Sea in Canoe. Kris Newsom, of DC, was rescued by the Coast Guard this morning 47 miles off the coast of Maryland. He was found adrift in a homemade canoe after a custom sail he had designed from plans found on the Internet tore from its mountings, leaving him at the mercy of the offshore currents. Despite being stranded in the canoe for three days, Mr. Newsom was in high spirits, having left shore with a cooler of beer, a boom box, and a number of Metallica CDs. After being treated for mild hypothermia he was released to his family. According to rescuers, Newsom said he wanted to extend the range of his canoe, which was designed for recreational use on lakes and calm rivers, and he intended to reach England to visit the Land Rover factory in Solihull."

By the way, Paul Allen is selling one of his yachts if you are interested. Not the one that's equipped with torpedoes, sadly.

 Oh man... that broke me..! :applause: Well done sir. Well done indeed.

Wish I could justify shelling out for a yacht... I'm just looking for more mobility when fishing on the coast. (and extra buoyancy so I can bring more beer is always a bonus. :) )

Just take the kid to a baby sitter and get a fucking job already.

Once I get back to California, where there's decent pay for what I do, it's at the top of my list. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the fruits of my sugar momma's labor. :D

In terms of buoyancy, I was kidding about needing more - my canoe can carry up to 900 pounds, and doesn't ride too low in the water for rough water use. Ultimately the only reason I want the outrigger is so I can sail the canoe easily.
