This is a brand new (remanufactured) engine from Atlantic British (long block). Immediately when we got it, the classic tick that the original engine had was there. Very concerning to me. The tick is upper right (passenger side). I was told to drive it 500 miles to see any other issues. I noticed yesterday after about 400 miles a coolant leak. Got the dye, and saw that it all comes from the overflow hose, and nowhere else. I (maybe mistakenly) was under the understanding that the remanufactured engines at Atlantic British were rid of the slipped liner issue. However, the tick is EXACTLY like the original engine (it wasn’t destroyed by a slipped liner, but by a tow truck company’s negligence). I plan on calling Atlantic British on Monday, and getting it into the shop as soon as possible, however I was wondering if there was anything I could do to check for it in the meantime. The original engine had the same issue once, and we replaced the reservoir and cap about a year and a half ago. If I should get another cap, I can do that to check as well. I’m relatively mechanically inclined if that information is needed (also a MechE student). Also, if the engine breaks down part of the fun is getting into it and diagnosing it at least 😂 Any suggestions on what I should do is welcome, like pressure tests, etc. Thanks!

Edit: This is the second remanufactured one we have had, the first one was from GoldWing, and it had a huge oil leak as well as a coolant leak. The coolant leak did not come from the overflow though, with the same cap and reservoir. That’s what makes me not think it’s the cap at all.

I would make sure AB does everything it can to resolve those problems. Fresh engine making noise and coolant leak, I would take it to there recommended repair shop to be fixed.

I definitely will, thank you! I was basically just wondering from anyone what this sounds like, and if you guys think it will be salvageable. I am calling AB on Monday.

Good luck! I have heard of multiple AB engine failures. For what they charge they should be bullet proof.

Slippy your going in different directions with your post. Sound like your blaming AB for a coolant leak:) So it can not be a liner making noise on a AB block. Did you run it through break in and is the noise still there after the 500 miles? Did you immediately bring the rpms over 2000 for 15 minutes upon first firing it up and running it? if not you can kill the cam and lifters in a new engine. you have to get the lifters spinning right away. I have had engine builds tick for a short time on new instalation. it subsides usually after a few heat cycles as everything gets lubed up and broken in. There are a lot of friction points in these motors. My advice and this is what i do when it is someone elses motor is to call and advised them of the noise, get their opinion and get it noted and then run it.

I understand you replaced the reservoir and cap a year ago. I'd start with replacing the cap again anyway. It's inexpensive, and depending on where you live you can buy one from a local auto parts store and even return it if it turns out the cap is not the problem.

Always start with the easiest and least expensive solution.

I recently installed a AB long block for a customer to resolve a tick in the motor. The new motor had a tick as well. I worked with their machine shop and eventually got it resolved. At first we tried lifters and complete rocker shaft assemblies (it sounded like top end noise). Ultimately a short block fixed it.
