I've got a 97 disco that's overheating after a few miles and appears to be blowing coolant out through the reservoir tank, is this a shot water pump?
any suggestions?

In general (not Disco specific) It could be a stuck thermostat, or a plugged radiator, in addition to possible water pump issues. Is it leaking coolant from any other place?

If it was thermostat it would most likley boil before you left the drive way.

Radiator
Change it for new one dont mess around.
and do thermostat and waterpump at same time if not done recently.

not leaking anywhere I can see, definately not leaking at waterpump. all previous threads seem to point to thermostat.

Water pumps are not complicated devices on any vehicle. Just an impeller that moves water. Basically the main problem that can happen with a water pump is the seals fail and it starts leaking water. If it is not leaking water (coolant) then it is working...but if it is old and you are doing a cooling system rebuild (radiator, hoses, thermostat) it is a good idea to replace the water pump just to prevent eventual seal failure.

thanks phototone, I've never had a pump go bad that wasn't leaking, anyway I replaced the thermostat & that seems to have fixed the problem, in 45 years of vehicles that the 1st thermostat that's ever failed me. but then again it's always something new
