P1172 code

I have a code for a P1172 (2004 Land Rover Discovery V8, 4.6L), the scanner says the most likely fix is the maf sensor. It’s this sole code, nothing else is popping up. MAF sensor is expensive, so wanted to make sure that’s the only thing I should check for with that specific code. My air filter housing is cracked a bit, not sure if that could trip it as well. Any advice is welcome, thanks!

Make sure the connector to the MAF is properly seated and seal up the cracked air filter housing.
If that doesn’t fix it, take out a loan and buy the Bosch MAF.

There is a cheaper way to get the bosch sensor without getting the MAF housing. Think it was a VW part.
Is there still a parts cross over on this site?

I'd check with an ELM327 and torque app to see if the MAF is reading as expected or anything..

Then I would look for vacuum leaks on the intake manifold or the tube that goes to the MAF.. Technically any leaks before the MAF ie air box, shouldn't matter.

Odds are, you're sucking in unmetered air and it's tripping the MAF code. And be glad it's not a D1 as that MAF is 1000+$ new..

Thanks for the reply, if there are leaks in the air box, then you are saying it should not matter? By the "tube to the maf," which tube do you mean then if anything before the maf should not matter? Thank you!

Could an unsealed air filter housing be causing the code? I read from many sources that the air before the maf should not matter.

Honestly, you’d want sealed intake air throughout.
I forgot to mention you can also try cleaning the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner spray. Some use brake cleaner on it, and some use MAF cleaner spray.

From my Disco 2 parts cheat sheet…
MAF sensors:
  • 4.0L: Bosch part # 0 280 217 532; LR: #ERR 7171
  • 4.6L including P38 RR: Bosch part # 0 280 218 010; LR: #MHK 100800
  • Sensor only no housing (VW) DELPHI #AF10383
