Never thought I'd have to ask about a ladder install.

But anyway, safety devices ladder for a P38 and it came with some bolts, no nuts, and some rivet inserts.

Anyone ever use these inserts before? The rivet tool I have now won't work, apparently I need a different one. Know which one it is?

Those are rivnuts...there is a special tool, but you can also install them with normal tools. I am now trying to remember which website (EE, here, etc.) showed how to install them using a wrench and other hand tools. I utilized this method when I installed the ladder on my discovery.

EDIT: look in the tech section here under LR Genuine Ladder Install. It walks you how to install w/out rivnut tool.

Ladder on a P38, but it comes with its own step.
1. Open top tailgate.
2. Open bottom tailgate
3. Close top Tailgate
4. Use bottom tailgate as step.

Where did you get the Safety Devices ladder. New or used? I have been looking for one for my '03 Mark III Range Rover, Safety Devices used to make them for the G-4 model but they have stopped making ladders and I can find a stockist who still has one, or a breaker willing to separate roof rack and ladder. Don't need the roof rack, but a ladder to reach to the back of the Thule roof box I use.
(I have asked on the rangerovers.net forum previously).
Thanks for any advice.

oh yeah, and to install this stupid ladder i ended up just using bolts and nuts, no rivets anywhere.

it was super hard to reach some of the spots though. ended up using long forceps (i think thats the tool, like a medical tool of sorts) to hold onto the open ended 10 mm wrench which was taped at the bottom to keep hold of the nut.

lost a few in the process considering the angle and the tiny amount of room to work with doing it this way.

so for those of you looking to install the ladder on the P38 and wish to avoid the rivets for whatever reason, it is possible to do with just bolts.

You seem to be talking about racks, whereas we are discussing ladders.

Or at least thats what the picture suggests.

I know that post talks about putting the MKIII rack on a P38. Valhorndallas mentioned a MKIII ladder... so my question was: do the MKIII ladders really fit on a P38?

no MKIII ladders would not fit. if you want p38 ladder EE has those as as well...so why even worry about a MKIII ladder...(?). if you sport a p38 which according to your signature, you do, then go to https://www.expeditionexchange.com/rangerover/ and scroll to near the bottom and right above the the MKIII ladder is the SD p38 ladder.

also I only mentioned MKIII ladders b/c the poster ahead of me, NorthofSeven, asked where to get a ladder for his '03 which is an MKIII, thus I directed him to purchasing an MKIII ladder.
