What's the bottom line? Can it be done for a few grand?

1984 defender (imported RHD, prob. grey market) with 2.25 and 5 speed. The price is right, but I would prefer a diesel.

I am in the process of replacing the 2.25L petrol in my Series III 109 with a mercedes 3.0L diesel. I had the motor from my old 300TD. I found the adapter plate for it on line at www.seriestrek.com .

There are numerous kits out there for many different diesel engines. They range from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand.

In my case I have about $1500 in the conversion excluding the motor. I had to buy the adapter plate, fabricate new motor mounts, have the sump modified (welding and fabricating aluminum) put in a remote oil filter and new oil cooler, add electric cooling fans instead of the belt driven one, do some wiring magic for the glow plugs and I replaced the gas tank and fuel lines and I got off pretty light. I am almost ready to fire it up.

What will be interesting is whether I will need an overdrive for highway driving or if the diesel will turn the revs needed to drive over 65. Of course this is a series that I am talking about. A defender would be geared better with a five speed and the 3.54 diff. I may change my ring and pinion gears out depending on the situation.

So to answer your question, I think that it is going to cost you more than a couple of grand if you have to buy the engine.

Very good info, thanks.

The reason I ask is that I would like a diesel 110 defender/SIII 109 type to add to the collection, and have found a couple of relatively reasonable options, but one is petrol and one a diesel. The diesel is a SIII coverted to a defender look, and the other is an early 80's defender with 2.25 petrol (or at least I am told). The price difference is 1k, with the diesel SIII-to-defender being more. However, the 80's defender is visually more appealing, and is a soft top.

Thanks.

What diesel engine is it in the Series?

If it is a 2.25L NA diesel then you would be better off putting a 200 TDI or a 300 TDI into the Defender. It will cost more for sure but the drivability will be far superior.

It is the 2.25 na, although it has a tuned head on it. The owner says it can cruise at 60-65, but that's it.

FWIW I picked up a 300tdi, matching R380, intercooler and all the other bits out of a D90 for about $2800. Plus carriage. Not sure how much that will be yet, but I'm hoping around $500 adding it to a container already coming over.

That is more than I can afford to play with, on top of the vehicle price to begin with. Back to the proverbial drawing board. I may just snag the defender, but will have to wait to see if a few things come together first.

Thanks for your help.
