Opening day was good this year, two of us bagged out, and one for the farmer who was nice enough to let us walk her fields.

My friend used an old Stevens Double bbl., the farmer and I used the old 870.

That night, the reward; pan fried pheasant breast in olive oil with lemon and homegrown herbs. On the side, wild rice and homemade salsa from homegrown tomatoes, cukes, basil, hot peppers, etc.

That morning, on State land, the dogs kicked up a couple of grouse in the thickets, but we were always out of position in thorns, alders and saplings so overgrown, we couldn't swing the guns around for any shots. Next time, I guess!

I have just discovered the joy of pheasant hunting. I've bird hunted(well, bird shooting) in Alabama, but that was farm raised birds. The habitat has pretty much disappeared. Pheasants are all over the place in North Dakota. On opening day I found 2 of my 3. My Golden is starting to figure the hunting thing out.

Yup, those are my buddy's Brittanys. The older one is a great pointer but a terrible retriever. The younger one is only 7 months old, but makes up for lack of experience with super-sonic speeds!

NA, that is a sweet Golden, how old? Yeah, the Dakota's are where it's at, my friend with the dogs went to SD for a week and bagged out every day in the first hour - I may go with him next year.

Just bagged another rooster today, (with no dogs!) this time, pan-fried in olive oil with cracked peppercorn and homegrown habanero peppers on a bed of whole-wheat pasta.
