on the plus side to getting new bearings,
now you can use your old race as a set-up race to get the pinion height right.
take the old race to a belt sander or the like and sand a bit off the outer egde.
now the race will drop into the housing without having to press in and out. once the pinion height is right simply swap with the new race.
keep in mind that the pinion height shim on the new gear set will differ from what was used on the 3.54 set.

good luck....

WOW, GENIOUS.
that just saved me hours. I was trying to figure out the fasterst way to get it in and out.
Awesome tip, thanks alot.

Part numbers??

Anyone have the pinion bearing cone and cup part numbers, both inner and outer? I mean the Timken, NGK, etc. numbers, not the Rover numbers.
Thanks,
Tom

"took some effort to actually break outer bearing (i didnt feel like repeating it on inner) - with hammer and chisel "

don't you mean hammer and sickle?

Silly me. It turns out the timken web site has a section where you can look up bearings by application. Right there is Land Rover Discovery pinion bearings. Picking them up monday at a local bearing house.

Good Luck finding the 801346X. I forget what the X means, but from what I understand, it's a pretty rare bearing. Most places do not stock that part #. You might need to go to GBR for that.
