I've been using the Thermal Dynamic Cut 51 for about four years and it is flawless. This unit uses compressed air either from a tank (breathing air) you can get from a welding supply house or from a compresor and not a specialized gas which is why I chose this one. They have updated it and now it's been superseceded by the Cut 52 which has a better range of cutting and improved electronics.
It depends on the materials you plan on cutting and you should buy a machine that will cut well above what you plan on cutting. They also have machines that have built-in compresors if you don't have one available.
The consumables are what hurt the most. As you progress using one if you've never used one before you'll eat some up and they ain't cheap. If you don't keep the tips up you'll get nasty looking cuts and wil take more clean-up with a grinder.

Although I could never afford one, I had the opportunity to use an Esab... Hands down, nicest machine I cold even imagine using, blows my hyper-therm away!

I love my Esab plasma cuter and welder they are better than any Miller product that I've ever used, but they where a little pricey in comparison.

How about this bad boy:

In that image you can only see the 2 torches, the plasma head is off frame to the right, but its on the same gantry.

The plasma is a 300 amp cutting station that can handle up to 1" thick carbon steel 8' x 40'. The torches the only limiting factor is what the forklift can handle, but 4" - 6" has been done before.
