I was kind of bummed out to see the info about the poor performance when towing a 2-3K camper...I was about to buy a very nice one for about a grand to take behind my 96 D1. I guess I still will since the summer camping is mostly at the reservoirs ....figure something else out for winter. If they suck so bad at towing why did they put the fliippin hitch mount back there??

So you have a rear recovery point of course.

And most of those opinions about towing are from people that have bumper thier heads. The Disco doesnt have alot of power and it doest have the best brakes in the world. Add 3K on a hitch behind it and what happens next is common sense. Treat it just that way and its fine...... It doesnt get the job done like an F-350 but it does get it done..

I tow a fully loaded Pop-up camper (3500lbs plus gear in my DII) a lot during the summer. I tow on both the freeway and many miles of mountain roads. You aren't setting any speed records and you know it's back there but it is fine. Pay attention to your driving and you shouldn't have any problems. Make sure you have trailer brakes and possibly sway control.

I love to hear things like pulling with a Rover. I used to own an isuzu Amigo, 98hp 4cyl 5spd, and I pulled a 2000lbs trailer from VA to OH often... So far with my Disco, I have pulled about 5000lbs with no trailer breaks, I wasn't in a hurry and it was slow, but I made it and the Disco did very well considering. If I had trailer breaks, and a sway control and load level hitch, I could have driven it anywhere.

But then again I grew up pulling trailers and even driven a semi a few times.

Funny, never heard the towing as bad. In fact, my dad uses our 94 D1 to tow an open trailer with a racing-modified BMW 2002 to several tracks in NY, CT, and WV. Other people who have tagged along with him along the way towing with huge Big Three trucks are amazed at the Disco's towing. It's acutally better than some of their pickups.

Maybe it's just the light weight of an open trailer and a weight-reduced car?

Dude- make sure you're looking at the ACTUAL weight of the trailer. Most pop-ups aren't anywhere near that heavy. I tow my pop-up behind a Freelander (same HP, less torque) and it's fine- even when I load a couple hundred pounds of water, food, generator etc on the trailer.
I pick up my new trailer tomorrow, and it's much heavier (bigger) but has brakes. I think I'll use the DII for towing that one.
A pop-up behind a Disco is cake. The lack of wind resistance vs. a 'regular' trailer also helps a LOT.

I agree with what Kyle said. I pull an enclosed 6x12 trailer around OH, MI and IN. Loaded with all our racecar and gear it wieghs out at about 2500 to 2800#. Our 98 D1 pulls it fine. You can feel the resistance especially when it's windy and the fuel milage goes down. The only thing I wish it had where trailer brakes.

I saw one of these at out local RV dealer. Pretty rugged with good ground clearance. Not something you would want to pull though rocky terrain, but a nice place to come home to after a long day on the trails.

They also have a toy trailer, the Scorpion, with a cross-mount tent-trailer in the front. The rear 8' x 12' toy hauling deck could be used as a sun deck or a place to set your table off the ground.

Some friends of mine have the Starcraft version of that pop-up. Sleeps five adults, plenty of room on the cargo deck for firewood and gear boxes, and yes, very nice to crash in after a long day of trail running.
