Popping under the hood

My 96 D1 had been sitting since winter. Battery died so I just got a new one and got it started up. Went to drive it to take the old battery up, and at the first stop sign, i put it into 1st and it seemed to have no power. Then what sounded like popping sounds under the hood on the drivers side. That continued and i thought I could smell something burning. I limped it around the corner back to the house.

Does anyone have any idea what that could be?

Thanks!:banghead:

it really sounded like the small explosion sounds were coming from under the hood...?
and i swear i could smell something burning. but maybe i was inflating it. possible low fluids somewhere?
it ran fine the last time i drove it, which was probably in March.

Have you looked under the hood with the truck running??

I did.. sounded a little rough with it in gear but when i took it out of gear and just let it idle with the truck emergency parking break on, it purred. it was only when I drove it.

as for the explosions, it literally sounded like muffled firecrackers going off under the hood on the drivers side.

Try it again and rev the engine using the throttle body.

Headgasket?

did i tell you about that p38 with a terrible exhaust leak that turned out to be a blown head gasket? go figure, drove fine, no real power loss, but gasket blew out from the cylinder so it sounded like the flex pipe (on the passenger side header) was leaking. of course, after doing head gaskets the heater core exploded when the customer drove it home. i put 15 miles on the truck and as soon as the customer drives it it blows coolant out the vents!

these trucks are awesome.

My 96 Disco did that. Thought it was the manifold, turned out to be the head gasket. When I removed the head the leak looked like someone drew a line with a pencil. It sure made a racket for being so small.

That happens when cylinder pressure is maxed out- almost always it's related to sticking exhaust valves. Every one I have ever seen do it has at least one bad exhaust valve.

Sounds like a wire or two got knocked loose, or something chewed up the plug wires over the winter. Popping was misfiring, you hear it on the driver side because its popping back through the intake. This also happens with sticky exhaust valves but they usually have to warm up real good unless they are really bad.

I pulled both heads and there was nothing sticking. The guy at the machine shop that did them confirmed same. The gaskets were replaced and heads were done at 114,000 when I bought it, this one blew at 298,000. That's pretty good IMHO. Always an exception to the rule.

Yes, to clarify, I listened more closely and the popping sound was coming out of the snorkel. almost like it was choking out. I checked the coolant and there was not exhaust in it...
rookie question: where are the exhaust valves? how do I unstick them. Yes, I'm still very much a greenhorn on these cars. But i'm learning. thanks!
