Portal axles for D1

Any reason why you want to put portals on your Discovery? Front and rear Sal's would do the trick if you are looking for something stronger.

It's not about strength, all about clearance

True, portals would definitely give some great clearance. Can't argue with that. If the vehicle in question is also your DD would the portals be worth putting on?

Zane,

The benefit of portals is that you get the extra clearance without having to put on larger tires. You won't increase your approach/departure angles, but you won't be hitting the diffs on the rocks as easily. With portals you keep your center of gravity low because you don't need to lift the truck or put giant tires on. Smaller tires, low center of gravity, are both daily driver friendly items. Portals are also a great way to make your truck into a bit of a sleeper. It isn't a bolt-on project though, so do your research and make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before doing something like this.

Zane,

You obviously have not been bitten by the bug. Those of us that actually wheel our trucks are always looking for something new to do to our trucks even if it wont be the best benefit for daily driving. I will give you one bit of advice, do not go over to Pirate and ask these questions.

It is generally understood that portals actually INCREASE the COG, since all the weight is 5-6" higher up, and so is all the other hefty items accordinly (engine, drivetrain, etc...)...The ONLY thing that portals do is pumpkin clearance...which you can associate with many other things...but that's their main use...

A D1 with 39.5" tires that has a 2" suspension lift, 2" body lift and loads of cutting with non-portals will be FAR more stable than the similar with 35" tires, portal axles and no body lift/cutting...We've tried it, and we've seen it work...

but in theory arent portals much heavier then standard axles, thereby increasing the unsprung weight, somewhat negating the higher COG?

I wheel my truck, but maybe not to the degree that you guys do. You are right about me not being bit by the bug. I have no intentions of doing any extreme modifications to my truck. I was just curious. However, I must say that there is some good information on this thread.

a complete portal swap like a MB or volvo would be...but the drop boxes cant be heavy enough to make a big difference.

a close buddy has a unimog and the COG of that thing is actually pretty high but its so wide it is still very stable. but get it tipping going down off camber stuff and you have to drive it REALLY aggresive on the throttle to keep it from tipping over.

as much hype as they get...my disco is more stable for sure.
