potential maf problem...

just did a long road trip up to the northwest in our 93 lwb and for the most part the truck ran fine, with no problems. along the way we did experience some intermittent stuttering (for lack of a better word). the car would sometimes start to stutter slightly.. usually would happen if i ran the a/c or the a/c and front windshield defrost at the same time.
after i checked all the obvious stuff (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, listened to injectors, etc etc) i figured it might be the maf sensor starting to have problems.
i disconnected it while running and the computer took over..reconnected it problem went away for awhile then came back. it comes and goes..

any ideas
sorry about the long description

just got a could 12 the other day. air flow meter. i pulled the plug and it was covered in some nasty looking brownish white sludge? could this be the problem or is this just some leftover dyelectic greese?

sludge = bad. even if it is dielectric grease it shouldn't be in the connector! Get some no-residue contact cleaner and clean things out. You can also use it on the inside of the MAF. Radio Shack, Napa, lots of other places sell it.

As others have said, MAFs fail very rarely. It's much more likely to be the cable harness or some other piece of the electricals...

Is it on a bench or still on the vehicle?

This might not have been a very good idea.

Disassembly for cleaning usually means removing the end caps and cleaning the sensing wires.

its still on the vehicle. its easy to take off though........

 Hmm, yanking the guts out with it still on the vehicle may not be a recipe for success... prolly time to take it off, stick it on a bench with some good light so you can really look it over - clean it - try to put it back together.

ok i will do that. it seems pretty straight foward. the air flow sensor still works even though guts where removed....ill take off the end caps and clean them up if they need it. the inside chamber seems to be spotless....maybe the wires are dirty..ill check it out. first off have to clean the sludge off of the connector. that might be the trick..
