How common is the Powersteering leak for disco I's?

I have 97 Disco I and she leaks P-fluid, so I fill her up once a month. Is this safe? What could be the problem? and can I fix it on my own or would I have to take it to mechanic? Estimates on prices for fixing? If anyone is located in DC-Metro area, anything will help. I'm currently located at Hopkins, and will be here till tomorrow for finals. But heading home tom. afternoon, so if ANYONE can help, much help would be appreciated. The object is to elarn as much as I can about ym truck and learn to be proficient enough to fix most of problems on my own. Thank You.

The PS hoses are not long-lived and Rover specified the cheapest hose clamps they could possibiy find.... If you hose the area clean, you'll most likely find it is leaking fluid from the reservoir fittings rather than the PS pump itself.

The low-pressure hoses can be replaced relatively cheaply. One of the major Rover parts suppliers had a 'sale' on a kit that included all hoses (both low and high pressure) for under a hundred bucks.

there is a lucas product [saw it yesterday selling at walmart] many have claimed gives great results in stopping or slowing power steering leaks...that said most leaks in the power steering department are not cheap or easy to fix. If only leaking from hoses new ones can be bought reasonably from several aftermarket suppliers and changed out pretty easily. Clean up the area well and try to locate positively where it is leaking from then post or use search feature so people here can best suggest how to help you approach a proper repair.

I had a leak too. 95 D1. Tightening the hose clamps fixed it partly then I saw it was leaking from the output shaft seal. I bought the Lucas power steering sealer and put a few ounces in. It seems to be dry now. The stuff seems to work!

hoses and the box are both very common. hoses are easy and $100 to replace, box not so much. replace the hoses (i'm sure it needs it, they all do if they're orig) and see if it helps or cheat and just add some lucas.

I've heard that Lucas PS leak stop works, but mine leaks so badly that I've got PS fluid dripping off the bottom of my front diff. One full bottle and the leak is no better, perhaps worse, than before.

dont forget that discos take atf in the power steering resevoir! anything else will eat the seals.....if youve been topping off with "powersteering" fluid... :(

but yes, the hose clamps are crappy! changing them is something you can do yourself easily and cheaply. buy any screw/bolt on clamps from the auto parts store and go to town.

enjoy!
