Usually the problem is the hose clamps on the resevoir. Replace them with standard screw on hose clamps and clean the thing up and see if the problem goes away.

Often times on the D1, the problem is actually where the rubber hoses are clamped onto the PS reservoir. I suggest you inspect the reservervoir first, as that is much simpler to deal with!!! Not sure about D2 power steering system... same? Different?

[Edit] Like he said in previous message...

mine is a D2...and it seemed to start after my trip to tellico this past week. maybe all the bumpy trails caused the hoses to leak...who knows?

How's this for a leak? Do as suggest above and then just check it every month or so and top it off with atf.

:banghead: I can't say i have a leak, but i do have one crazy humming/grinding/growling sound from my DII PWR STR. unit. I've checked around found some good deals on units lowest 245 and change and a few that qualify as buying the farm. When driving the HWY systems, if i drive in the fast lane nothing no noise, if i drive in Grandma's lane that is when the noises are generated. It's an 02 DII, Steering issue's shouldn't have started yet?

My DII power steering pump started making funny noises when I started the truck, and when I turned it off. A month later the pully and shaft started to walk out of the pump housing and shreaded my serp belt. Funny thing is, it never did leak. It's my wifes daily driver so I was off to the dealer to get a new part.

Why do you think it is your power steering, and not something like a fan clutch, water pump, etc.? Is there any other symptom besides the noise at highway speeds?

Jeez. Not another PS leak thread.

Long story short, start topping off your PS fluid with Lucas PS fluid. Id guess your seals are 'rattled' and Lucas will fix it. You didn't hit anything hard enough to break anything. Just keep topping off the reservoir.. it may take a bottle or bottle and a half, but it works.

Mine leaked way worse than kraz1e's (topping off every fill-up) and I didn't use ATF, I used Lucas and it was cured.

You raise an intersting question, i unfortunaetly just assumed it was the steering, it only makes noise when i turn to the right, the faster i'm going the more abnoxious the noise, to the left nothing sounds like the day i bought'er. :smilelol:

Wheel Bearings?

It is easy to check. Jack up the corner of the truck and check if there is play when you grab the 12 and 6 o'clock and 3 and 9 o'clock. If so, the it is a wheel bearing, and I would get it fixed ASAP. Because of the heat generated it can warp your axle stub.
