I have a 1998 Land Rover Discovery and need to get it into neutral to load on a trailer to sell. I had a key break off in the ignition, after getting a locksmith to remove the key and make a new one the key seemed to slip. Upon further investigation it seems my ignition switch is completely stripped so I cant even start it with a screwdriver. Any advice on how to get this thing in neutral without it being on? Is there an emergency release in the gearbox? Will getting to the emergency release require me to take the whole center console out?

unplug all the connections to the barrel mechanism. remove the ignition switch from the end of the barrel mechanism (two small phillips head screws hold it on). At that point you should be able to move the transmission selector to neutral when you move the ignition switch to position II (positions...... 0=off; I=radio on; II= running engine; III= engage starter motor).

Due to the ignition switch being stripped it took some work but I got it done. Thanks for the help.
