Question about Indicator Needles (Speedo, Tacho, Fuel, Temp)

Does the speedometer indicate negative velocity while backing, or is it an absolute value? I have not been able to tell, as my head is always turned while backing.

Yes, that is why there are negative numbers on everyones speedometer.

Since time is relative to the observer, If I use reverse all the way to work I should get there earlier?

The way the gauge is arranged, 130 is closer to zero if you go backwards. Therefore, if it isn't an absolute value....

The reason I ask is it wouldn't take much to rotate the driver's seat 180 degrees, some rerouting of the steering gear; and in a backwards-driving Discovery you might attain phenominal speeds whilst still in first gear. For those of us with transmissions probably not far from becoming stuck in first gear, this might be a cheaper alternative to a transmission rebuild.

Odd you should mention this. With a really long driveway, I notice that I don't have to fill up as often if I back out rather than turn around and pull out forward...

the speedometer is electronic, and the signal to it comes from a sensor at the output of the t-case. It doesn't know in what directon it rotates.

Maybe you should get a new instrument cluster. EE carries them, they are about $250, and have about 80 pics and a three page write up about the advantages to switching to this system. The cluster is sweet if you didn't get the factory one.

All of ours have the negative numbers on them. Right guys.
