my 96 D1 has stock motor, stock gears, flowmaster 44, hi-flow cats, and 265/75/16 tires... Its a dog on the road and slower than an 18 wheeler in the mountains near asheville...mpg is around 10-13... so I'm wondering about re-gearing down the road... Im fairly new, but stock gears are 3.54ish right? ive heard of a 3.73, 3.9, 4.1, and up options for re-gearing.. the new gears allow for the driveshaft to rotate faster right? when you re-gear you essentially lose a little hp, a little mpg, and gain a lot of torque right? What are the gains and losess for each set? its a daily driver so i wanna lean towards 3.73. what does it feel like driving after the new gears? any expertise or advice, THANKS

Actually, wrong on all counts (except the driveshaft). Going with bigger tires WITHOUT re-gearing is what costs you. Use one of the gearing calculators with your tire size and it will tell you which new ratio is closest to stock. This will get you your mileage and performance back. I went with 4.10's, but I run 255/85/16's on a D2.

Ok, yeah I basically had ideas of gearing, but honestly wasnt sure at all if what I thought was correct. what are the setbacks of lower gearing like 4.10 vs 3.73 or for more of a difference 4.7 (if it exists) vs 3.73? im just tryign to understand it a little more before deciding whats for me
