Replacing my rear 3rd member in my D2. (spiders broke some teeth)

1. On a D1, how can I tell externally if it's a 10 or 24 spline 3rd? Stamped numbers? Something in the VIN?

I'm thinking of "Lincoln Locking" my 3rd and playing with it until I get a healthy unit to swap in. So...
2. How dumb is this, and what will break first?

Thanks in advance! :bigok:

If it's a DII it's 24 spline.

Will Tillery has some good thirds for sale in the FS section very cheap.

You could lincoln lock it if you are trailering it to the trail but if you plan to drive it you will break something expensive.

If it is a D1 its also 24 spline.

Have not done it on a D2, but on a D1 stock axle shafts will break first with a welded rear.

Thanks for the quick reply guys...

Yeah, I have access to a D1 for parts (almost free) so i was going to swap the 3rd in my D2.

So all D1's are 24 spline?

I guess I won't weld the rear. I'm Just desperate for some locked action. Toyota conversion would be good... KEITH!!

thanks guys.

Yeah D1 and DII thirds are interchangable. The only thing is that the axle housing on the D1 has studs and the DII has bolts that hold the third in place. The outer mating flange on the D1 I think is thicker so you might need longer bolts.

Some of the oldest D1's UK type had 10 spline but none of the North American ones.

Cheers,

Mike
