Hey all - can I tow a rrc with everything in neutral on a tow dolly for about 100 miles? a tow dolly is just the front two wheels. If everythings disengaged, it'll be fine, right?

I'd pull the rear drive shaft, leave the front attached and both gear levers in neutral.

If it is anything like a disco, put t-case in neutral, tranny in park, and key in unlocked position. I pulled my 98 across the country on a dolly with my 96 with this procedure, and had zero issues. The guy on this board who told me this method has pulled his disco behind his rv for years.

Best to put transmission in neutral, not park, when towing a D-II. Transfer case in neutral too, of course. I have towed mine thousands of miles this way, DO BE SURE TRANSFER CASE IS REALLY DISENGAGED. DO NOT TRUST THE INDICATOR LIGHT!!

I believe the root of the question is asking how the transfer case is lubricated. I don't think there is an oil pump in the LT230 is there? It is just splash lubed I believe so it should be fine in neutral.

The ZF is another matter though, without the engine running there is no oil pressure so turning it with no lube can't be good. Leaving this in park ensures it won't free wheel.

Some rare autos have an oil pump on the output shaft too, those can be towed in neutral.

He said Range Rover Classic. Of course these cannot be towed on a dolly without removing the propshaft. Flat towing it would spell disaster for the viscous coupling.

Owners maual says all automatic Land Rovers should be flat towed with transmission in PARK.
