I just had my new 4.88 gears set up for the front high pinion(at a Boise shop) and got everything installed last night. Well on my test drive/break-in(rear drive shaft removed running in front wheel drive) I didn't get 10 minutes down the road when I heard a pop and a bang. so I pulled over and immediately looked underneath to find my pinion had come loose.

I finally got the front driveshaft removed and had a buddy tow me to his place which was only a couple blocks from where I was. The whole way there, there was some nasty grinding going on, so I new the outcome wasn't going to be good.

After getting everything torn apart this is what the third looks like...:banghead:

Interested to hear what the setuo guy has to say.

Whose gears are those?

Trail Gear R&P

I dropped the third off at the dudes shop so he could take a look at it after he tears it apart, but I have a feeling I'm going to get stuck with the cost.

There seems to be no reason for you to get stuck with the cost. The only reasonable reason for it to fail like this is bad parts or a bad setup.
Did the rear do anything? I would take it out and check it for the spacer and crush ring before something happens to it.

I should, but I just got back and that drive sucks.

If the guy doesn't say he's going to cover anything there aint sh*t I can do besides small claims court and I don't think it's even worth the hassle, but that's just me.

did he forget the lock tight on the pinion?

we had a guy on a trip a couple years back forget the lock tight and the pinion came loose and got sucked in just like that.

we ended up swapping his diff on a ice covered road in the middle of the night in 11* weather.

Did the inside pinion bearing come out or did the pinion bend? The pinion looks REALLY crooked in the second pic.
Is the 4.10 in the rear also made by Trail Gear R&P? That might have something to do with it as well.
