Radio removal

Previous owner has a kenwood radio installed in the 98 D1, and I’m wanting to remove it so that I can have access to wires behind it. I’ve gotten as far as the attached photo indicates. The remainder does not appear to “pop-out,” and the two screws below it appear inconsequential to its removal. Any suggestions for removal?

The radio is locked in place by the metal frame surrounding the cutout. You'll need to locate a set of Kenwood keys that will allow you to remove the stereo. You probably can find some universal keys on eBay and Amazon. Once the keys are fitted on both sides of the unit you'll be able to pull the receiver out.

i bought the universal keys on amazon for a few bucks a year ago when i needed to remove mine.

I pulled the Kenwood out of my '97 D1 with two metal strips from hanging file folders. They allow you to depress the tabs that are holding the head unit in place.

Insert them to the outside of the black plastic housing on the left and right. Wiggle the strips up and down. You will probably do best freeing one side and then the other.

Instead of radio keys, I used two butter knives. They worked well.
