P.S. I noticed you are in the OC. run by West Coast Rovers and let Eddie listen to it he's as honest as anyone with a Rover is.

I have had same subtle knock. Mine mostly went away with M1 Mobil Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 (Walmart) and a standard size Wix filter. My '04 manual recommends 5w-40 for all temps and xw-30 to 85F. The 30W oils typically have friction modifiers that may prevent the lifters from getting spun by the cam, so they don't fill or wear uniformly. Sites like www.rpiv8.com think using anything thinner than 20w-50 is sacrilege.

Cam knock was a problem with the 3.9s, and I think the 4.6s have some of it as well, despite the design change to hold the cam in place better.

Checking for exhaust leaks, better fuel, new plugs and wires, all good.

West coast rovers are the only ones that work on my truck. At 66K miles I got the magnacore wires from the land rover store, at 76K miles I took it to west coast rovers because of the knocking and they did $4,500 worth of work replacing all gaskets including crank shaft. they also said the magnacores had holes in them and I got new stock wires but I guess they kept the old plugs in. after that the sound went away till now or I guess is just masked so I could not hear it. Well it's 81k miles right now and it is at west coast rovers since I got those codes. They have no idea what the sound is, they said it might be lifters but not likely. they put new plugs in and the sound is still there, they suggest I drive till it gets worse or brakes because it does not make enough sound till it's warm but when they want to strip down the engine it will not be noticeable and they won?t be able to run the engine at that point to help locate the problem. they did say that it sounds like it is coming from cylinder 5 or 7. and cylinder 7 through a misfire code 10 minutes after the new plugs were put in.

I really think it might have something to do with my oil changes because when I got the truck back the first time it did not make any noise and west coast rover did the oil change at that same time. When I do an oil change I use 10w-30 and put it 6 quarts and a new filter. Geoff the manual really recommends 5w-40? How many quarts does the manual say to use with a new filter.

Thanks for any help guys

Use the dipstick to determine when its full. Put in 6, start it and run it for a couple of seconds..Shut it off, recheck, fill to spec.

Here is a Discussion about oil that may help you.

I'd say try the higher octane hopefully that works. Chasing down codes can put a damper on your winch fund. Its prob your cam slapping back and forth. If shes holding oil not overheating and you have enough power to get around let her be and if the faint knocking pinging etc gets to you invest in 2 more speakers and turn it up.

Good Luck George
