Random stalling

Well, just when you think all is well...

On the 96 D1 I have been driving for about 3000 miles since installing an engine and doing a whole lot more work, it has randomly stalled 3 times in 3 days, It starts right back up, though. We have had a lot of rain and I have been driving in it.

It seems to me to be less likely to be a fueling issue as it starts right back up and it has a new fuel pump. When it has stalled in gear (5-speed) the forward movement results in it only experiencing a short loss of power, sort of pop starting itself.

I know there are a lot of things that can cause this but… any suggestions?

When it stalls, is it at a light or moving slowly in traffic? IAC not keeping up? Sure it's happening so quickly it's not setting any fault codes.

I would be looking at the crank sensor. On D1 look at the wires. The insulation breaks down from oil saturation over 26 yrs.
Also make sure you haven’t trapped a harness under the ign. Coils bracket.

It happened once idling in the driveway. Once going about 40mph and once at about 20mph.

I was hesitant about using the crank sensor as the engine was a flood recovery. There was a fair amount of rust on the sensor ring. i used a different flywheel but kept the crank sensor. When I get another one off the lift I will swap in another sensor. I have one somewhere in the mess.

I will check/fix the wires before I swap in a sensor. Thanks to all for suggesting this. I just installed a y-pipe on this one. I could have bumped into the wires and pushed them over the edge.

If it’s not that, have you looked at water intrusion in your ECU. That had me chasing my tail for a while back when I had my 96. Maybe try moving various wires and harness around while it’s running to see if you can recreate it. Good luck.

I had considered that. i am wondering if water is a problem either there or maybe the wires to the crank sensor getting a bit wet. It hasn’t happened since I made this post and it also hasn’t rained.
