I was wondering if the RAVE approach to a coolant change is the best way? I have read the pros and cons of draining the block and want to know what has worked best.

Large pan under the front, undo expansion tank cap, pull off the bottom rad hose, stand back. Once it has calmed down, push the thermostat down below the bottom of the rad, and drain out a bit more. No big deal.

I've never bothered with taking out the block plugs. When refilling it has always taken the published amount to fill the system again - therefore I assume it was close to totally empty.

Havoline Extended Dex-Cool non-diluted or Prestone Extended Dex-Cool diluted 50/50. Which would you use? Same or is one better than the other? Should I change the thermostat, also?

There are a few threads around the forums about Dex-cool. If you decide to use it; it must be diluted. However, it's one of the few issues that there's a majority conscience to not use it. Just flush your system properly and use the old green stuff; use the 50/50 it'll take all the guess work out of it for you. Flush Your System Throughly, as the two coolants don't blend well.

I'm going to try to clear up the confusion. I was not questioning the type. Orange out so orange in for my rig. I was actually wondering about wether to pull the block plugs or not. I would also dilute the Havoline if I did not find the Prestone 50/50. From what I understand, the orange stuff (Dex-Cool) should be changed more often.

No to block plugs....just drain at lower hose and flush. To flush I use distilled water run till t-stat opens with heater on. Then drain and add the 50/50 dex cool. I've done this every two years on all my cars green or orange coolant.
