my rear diff has a pinion spacer but the repair manual only mentions one being in the front diff. It seems like the drive flange is not able to mesh with the pinion enough because of this spacer. I can only mesh 1" where without spacer I could mesh 1-1/2"

so My question is does that spacer really belong in the rear diff or did PO mess up and put one there by accident?

blue, thanks for the link. I guess the PO did that same conversion on my disco since mine has also been lifted 2" and has no rotoflex. It just seems odd that the flange is only meshing with the pinion half way.

1996. I'm convinced now my spacer is too wide. When I torque flange nut to 95 ft/lbs it does not even get to the nylon because it runs out of room.

spacer is Torrington AG 28584

Some aftermarket flange kits are long enough to use without a spacer. Does your flange look exactly like the one in the picture you showed or is it round? If it looks like the picture it's a LR part and needs the spacer.

Maybe you don't have the right spacer. Normally there is about 1/8" between the splines on the end of the flange and the pinion. It's possible you could have the wrong spacer the wrong washer.

Have you tried it without the spacer? Does the dust seal bottom out on the pinion seal?

anybody know how wide this spacer is from AB? It looks like what I need but its hard to tell by the pic. I submitted a parts query last week and called but they have no idea how wide it is.

OK, check out this picture:

http://discoweb.org/rotoconversion/2shafts.JPG

Using my middle finger of my right hand for scale, the spacer must be damn near, if not exactly a half inch wide. I just measured my finger relative to the position of my finger & spacer in the picture and it's spot-on one half inch. I doubt my finger size has changed much in the past 8 years. I also bought my spacer from AB.

blue, my spacer is 3/4" wide...1/2" is what I need, so I guess I need to order one from AB like you did. Thanks for the help

update

the spacer from AB works great. I don't know where the PO got that spacer that was in there but it was the wrong one. If anybody has this problem be sure to get the spacer from AB.
