Changing the thread as I am no replacing a diff, not diagnosing a wheel bearing issue.

I have reviewed the repair manual and looks like after removal of the exhaust, the drive shaft must be removed and of course the half shafts.

Looks like I can remove the half shaft with the knuckle in-tack? And do the half shaft seals at the diff require the 'seal preservation ring' or can you just be careful?

Anything I am missing?

its not much more work to remove the entire axle from the truck gives alot more room to get the diff out.....it is kind of heavy to get out so have another person there if you dont have a hoist to support it just remove those plastic thingsa from the seals just be careful when reinserting the axle thats all

any more q's let me know

Thanks Luc,

What do you think about these pics of the half-shafts?

I guess my seals are shot. Are the output bearings where the the scaring is? I guess that ruined these half-shafts? Is it easier/cheaper to source the whole assembly (knuckle and shafts) or find just the shafts and replace bearings?

I am assuming that my seal failed, water got in, and the rest is history.

Wow thats a new one for me!

I would say you need new axle shafts as well......did you happen to chk if there was lots of play at the diff end of the axles before you pulled them out?

i would think you had some kind of vibration too, no?

i belive boots are available seperate but axles are only available as a whole i think

Yes, I did have some play in the axles, but no discernible vibrations.
