Rear Door Jam Rusted Through

I attacked what I thought was some surface rust in booth my rear door jams only to find that both sides had rusted through to the wheel wells. Once I started grinding I was alarmed to find how wide spread it was. Any good recommendations to 1. Stoppping the spread and 2. Buillding back up the gaping holes.

Generally, the only way to keep the rust from spreading is to completely remove the affected areas and welding in new metal. There are ways to "slow" rust a bit by grinding away as much as possible and using a good phosophoric based neutralizer, and repainting with a quality epoxy or military ordnance primer...but it will come back through with time unless removed altogether.

And integrity is also a concern since the rusted area is now a weak spot...shoving bondo in there won't reinforce the damaged area so again, welding in new metal is the best way to go.

Wish there was better news to give - but rust is our enemy.
