Rear Jumpseat Removal

Ok, I did a search and didn't find much (though I'm almost positive this has been mentioned before).

I've been thinking about taking the rear jumpseats out of my truck for a number of reasons:

1. The kids in my family (not mine) are getting too big to ride back there, and I only allow them to use them on short trips anyway

2. I have installed a dog guard and cargo cover that are now getting in the way

3. I have my first aid kit, fire extinguisher, recovery kit, etc all bunjeed to the back seats and it would be nice to have a cargo bin to put them in.

4. Following #3, I would have more cargo space or room for the dogs!

5. I can more easily reach the rear light housing to replace the bulbs that keep burning out!

So, we have taken them apart before, but never completely out. I want to keep them in case I have kids and want to use them in the future. Is there a way to remove them without damage and then install the pocket panels for bins? Is there anyway that a D2 cargo bin would fit in that space (unlikely, I guess)?

Thanks in advance,
S

Something like this really helps, you can put a torx bit in it and get to those hard-to-reach bolts. That's the first one I found searching, you could probably get something like it from Sears, Snap-On, etc.

Alternatively you need to do something like use a crescent wrench on a torx bit like shown on the site Bruce posted above. But that will be painfully slow as the bolts are long and at least on my Disco not turnable with fingers so you have to wrench them all the way out.

The seats are a cinch to remove, a handful of torx bolts, you can leave the brackets in place or remove the trim-panel to remove brackets. The bin panels are pretty easily damaged, I have a pair around somewhere, they're not sturdy enough to put heavy items in them, but still handy.

So is there anyone out there who has replaced the seats with the bin panels? I'm thinking I would have to rig them to fit.....or maybe just get some cargo netting or something.....

How about some 20mm ammo cans? I have acquired a pair to replace the jumpseats in my 04 Disco, but haven't done so yet. Otherwise I would supply a picture. They'll fit in the space nicely and are tough. Installing them will be a piece of cake. Just drill holes in the boxes and bolt them in.

They are about 17x15x7".

This is a good idea. I already have one seat out to get to the trailer wiring loom trying to track down a short which *is not* as a result of the trailer wiring....

Cheers

I'm assuming you're talking D1, non rear A/C, ... the bin panels fit right in, you have to cut the slots where the panels go into the side panel, the side panels are the same though, just cut for jump-seat brackets or for bin-panel tabs.

Thanks Jeff! That's what I was wondering.

Sorry, cweimaraner, I'm going to keep them in case I ever want to use them again.
