Rearview mirror. Any of you have taken it apart?

My 99 D2 is suffering from the leaky rearview mirror disease.

Donnelly seemps reluctant to deal with a replacement of so old bits.

But...manufacturer and dimensions seem exact to the mirror fitted in the 2006-2008 VW camper van range (called caravelle, transporter, california... depends on market and country). Even the same rubberised switch and the tiny side apertures are there.

Some JAG XJ8 late 90s mirror looks nearly the same as well.

Yes, there is another but. The mirror surround is limestone, not black, and bracket does not seem to fit.

The goal- and target would be opening the D2 mirror housing, doing the same with the VW one and swapping internals.
Next monday I will take my measurements. Only would like to know if somebody had prised open the mirror housing or it is a self-destroying bit.

I prefer keeping the auto dim function, but if it can't be opened up then I might follow the manual-dim mirror route and get part #AWR2147 which retails at 23 ish pound sterling.
Happy wednesday to everyone.

Regards and thank you

Robert

If you want to go the manual route. Take the mirror apart and take the mirror itself to a glass shop and they can cut a piece of mirror glass to the same dimension to put back in your housing. Should be less than $20.

Te VW mirror might be of better quality, even though from the same manufacturer.
I am pretty sure it can be obtained cheaper than the LR one. And as the housing is a different colour, I wanted to swap internals.

I have never, ever, seen an auto dim mirror leaking, apart from the LR one. Why? Don't know.

Thanks for your input, I will take measurements today and will be on the hunt for a VW camper-california-caravelle-transporter bit

Robert

I removed the glass and found an identically shaped piece at an Auto Zone; a little super glue and it was good to go. didn't retain the auto-dim, but the lights underneath are nice to have.
