Recirculation won't stay on??

2001 D2 - I like to keep recirc on when driving long stretches of dirt / gravel to keep from breathing so much dust, even with 'econ' mode if cool enough outside. Camped at Toroweep (AZ grand canyon) which involved driving 100+ miles each way on dirt. Noticed (never happened before) that after a few minutes of driving, the recirc symbol would be gone on the display, and I'd start smelling dirt. Hit the button, it would show the symbol, and no more dirt smell - for a few more minutes, then it would revert to non-recirculation mode again, all by itself. Couldn't tell if it was related to washboard vibration, or anything else. It did not seem to happen on pavement once back out on the highway, though.

Any ideas what might cause this, or how to go about trouble shooting? Thanks,

RTF manual. Depending on operation, recirc is limited by time. In some modes, it stays on. There's a good explanation in the owners manual.

Oh, crap, how could I have never noticed this before? Now, just to find the manual - oh, I remember. I'm on my way... I'll report back to say how stupid I am...

OK, now you've done it. I reading the whole thing tonight. And, it is going in the glove box instead of a book shelf. Sorry for wasting the bandwidth.
