I am trying to decide doing the head gasket job myself with my son vs take it to get done. Has anyone in the St Louis area had this done and any recommendations locally?

I have used two different shops over that last several years for head gaskets on two of my '04s.

Carsmart on Watson and Laclede will do great work but they charge book time, so are fairly expensive.

I also used Reid Vann on Manchester on my other '04 (which I no longer have thanks to a u-joint grenading). They were less expensive but also less responsive to inquiries. This '04 also started to leak externally from the head gasket two or three years after the work was done. Not sure if that was a quality of work issue or just bad luck.

The head gaskets done by Carsmart were done in 2017 and have lasted over 100,000 miles. Yes, I drive the Discovery a lot. If you go to Carsmart ask for the mechanic/tech, Chris to work on your Discovery. He knows what he is doing on these Land Rovers.

Do you recall what Carsmart charged?

Walter’s in Brentwood used to work on rovers. GLB on Big Bend. (Real expensive). Westport Autohaus on N Lindbergh. I can check with my buddy and see if he will do it at his shop. They used to do a lot of Rover stuff. But I feel like they’ve been focusing more on older cars lately. I’ve done many gaskets on GEMS trucks. They are pretty easy. Not sure how much worse a BOSH truck is. If it were my truck, I’d tear in to it.

That would be great if you could check. I may attempt the 04 myself but my 03 just happened to dump all of it's coolant on the back side of the motor. 220k on the clock and never had head gaskets done before. Is it worth rebuilding?
