Redneck Cooling system tester

Yesterday my truck developed a coolant leak that is in close quarters at the rear of the motor. I checked the local parts houses loan-a-tool for a tester, but none had an adapter that would fit my Disco. After returning home, I saw an old bicycle tube in the garage. It stretched over the tank neck perfectly. After plugging the overflow tube, I rolled the open end up and ty-rapped it. Used another couple of wire ties for hose clamps on the tank neck. Then gorilla taped the whole thing to contain more pressure. I used my bicycle pump to pressurize it. Lo and behold, it held 10 psi and coolant started dripping! No more chasing leaks down with the engine hot. It is ugly, but it worked.

ha... like that "redneck" rigged pressure tester.

Whats wrong with the LR bottle jacks up front? Mine has been there for 17 years now and always works just fine, only ever had to top off with hydraulic fluid once.

On a side note not really worth expanding on...because it is pointless... why is it perfectly ok to call something "redneck" rigged but not "N" rigged? If we gotta have standards I guess having two is better than none right?

The leak ended up being the O ring on the heater hose tube that fits into the intake. It wasn't in the rear of the engine at all. Easy fix once I located it.

My bottle jack has been there 11 years. Used it last night. Still works just fine.

Maybe they are like head gaskets. Some lucky, some not so much.

Yea, throw it away because it aint worth a shit.

Either way, great ingenuity.

Hell, I've been using mine for a decade. I had to repair it once, but it still worked, it was just finicky. That thing is small, tall, and tough, and it's great for many tasks.

Everyone bitches about them, but mine has seen serious use, and I still love it.

It should be removed from the engine bay, though. The heat can cause problems with any bottle jack.

Cheers,

Kennith

It is compact and ridiculously convenient. I very rarely use mine, but every time I do it trumps all other lifting equipment.

Last time when I was trying to figure out WTF was wrong with my truck's driveline in Colorado, I needed to raise the entire rear end up in the air. Both XJack and Hi-Lift proved themselves useless and dangerous.
The little LR jack did the job just fine.
Speaking of longevity, mine's been in its factory space for soon to be 17 years. No problems, no leaks, no complaints.
