Regreting your Land Rover Discovery Purchase?

Actually a good question but I am fully committed because:

1. Unique - swing a dead cat and hit a jeep

2. Monster snow truck - that is important where I live

3. Great to wheel off road

4. Puts my old Xterra to shame

Sure there are cons like cost to operate, bad gas mileage but wouldn't trade it for the world. Also, instant kinship with other Rover owners (at least the modified ones). My D2 took me from starting out as off road newbie to trail leader at the last Rally.:victory:

Yes, I regret it 100%. I even made the mistake of asking others their opinions prior to my big mistake (buying a Diso). I will admit, it is by far the most fun to drive SUV I've ever had. I'll also second it's great factory delivered offroad capability, along with the cushiest ride I've ever had.

BUT!

The complete lack of reliabilty, lack of anyone cabable of fixing or even diagnosing the endless electrical problems has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Another plus, the Land Rover comunity seems to be as good and tight knit as the Suzuki crowd I love and wheel with.

-My tainted opinion, CZ

I'm sure everyone will correct me if I'm wrong, but if you can wrench , have an OBDII scanner, and truly appreciate a great off road vehicle, you were born to own a Land Rover.

I'll never own anything else.

You will become addicted and there is no "support group" for switching to another vehicle after you have had a LR. I accually use mine for work most everyday. It was a rough start, the gas mileage is worse than it should be, but it's been a good truck. I do hate that the factory has allowed such limited access to the ECU information unless you spend $1800.00 for a program that will only work on Land rovers. I still bought one anyway. I also had to do more research to troubleshoot my Rover than any other vehicle I've owned, so it's like a hobby too. Good Luck.

where i'm at right now, duh...
buy it and don't look back

some people go out in the mountains so they can get away from the city and enjoy nature.

I go out in the mountains because i want to get away from the city, enjoy nature, and have a blast in one of the coolest 4x4's ever built.

That's half the fun for me when i go on my trips. It just isn't the same when you go in a vhicle that everyone else and their mother has...

I bought a 97 disco to replace a tacoma on 33's for my wife as a dd/weekend family rig. I never thought that I would be fighting over the 6k rover when I have a 50k diesel cowboy caddilac in the driveway, but given the choice I ALWAYS DRIVE THE ROVER. 2" lift w/ winch, detroit locker, snorkel and it wheels very well. Not a rockcrawler, but super smooth and fun to drive.

Buy it. I have a 96 5-speed and I love it. I have had much worse cars than a Land Rover so don't believe all the BS. I have friends with Jeeps, they break too, same with anything else. Ask me about my wife's Mercedes (thankfully totaled by the step-daughter) junk. Or, the GMC pickup I had that had to have valve stem seals twice, rear ends twice (2nd time I had a Truetrac put in and never had another problem), or the 4 transmission replacements. My 96 has 218k on it, runs fine, doesn't use but about a quart of oil every 3k, the only major replacements have been brakes and tires (which is normal maintenence), one fuel pump, one left front ABS sensor. It had 119k on it when bought and I had the head-gaskets replaced, valve job at same time, radiator done, new hoses, new water pump. It's really been very low maintenence and it's a daily driver. I have so much faith in it I drive it down to Palm Springs all the time (1100 mile round trip), and even went to Kansas, Texas and back last Xmas with about 180k on the clock.

Mines a DD, and I can't think of driving anything else - and I have had tons of cars. Replace parts quite often (new front axle last Sun) but heck, I beat it hard. Best vehicle I have owned, not from reliability, but from pure enjoyment and love....aaaaahhhh

Yeah! What they all said! My wife bought my D2 in october as an early X-mas present. I'm sure she regrets it, but I don't! I absolutely love my D2, I have a hard time driving another car. Do it! and welcome. :bigok:

My only regret is not having enough money to add some mods to mine like some of the folks have here.

One day though...

I'm in that same boat. err I mean Rover.

Had Jeeps all my life.... bought my first rover with a blown head gasket (see my other posts), still haven't taken it on the road, and I'm more excited about this truck than any of the old Heeps. Just crawling underneath one makes me smile. These things are stout. Rover was doing things right with undercarriage a looooong time before Jeep realized the value of even just coil springs. In any case, you sound like a perfect case example of a rover owner. Welcom to the party. :applause:

I am sick with it too, with a 94 D1 trail truck and an 04 Daily driver my dispensible income is always heading their direction for mods. much to the wife's dismay. Buy it, drive it, wheel the piss out of it!

I Ange87,

I totally agree in all your points! However as never having owned an Xterra, what specific points does the LR put the Xterra to shame? Not trying to stir an argument at all! Rather genuine curiousity! :applause:

Sorry to sidetrack the thread!

Cheers,
Raul

No regrets at all!!

My 95 has been my daily driver since 2002. Bought it a year out of college (so you know I don't have much money!) and have been driving it 5+ years every day. She's got a little over 120K so far...

If I could afford it (that's not really a regret but a dream), I would replace everything with new or better parts and drive her for another 10 years!

No Regrets. I love when people tell me they are hard to fix and have horrible problems. These are the Sorostitutes/douchebags that begged their daddies for a land rover at age 16 so they could be the coolest kids at school. They are so sick of the "character" and have no concept of the true value of their truck. I love my 98LSE and I love what Ive done with it. My family protested the purchase because of what they've heard and everytime I modify it they ask me "how's it doing?" trying to see if I am still driving it trouble free. Ive had a few minor quips with it but nothing that could make me turn my back on my truck. Learn your truck, it pays off in the future. Buy parts from guys on the Dweb, they are your best resource. Become an addict.

Cheers,

Matt
