Replace Dowty washers?

I am rebuilding a 4.0 for a D2 for the second time in less than a year. I replaced the Dowty washers during the last rebuild, drove the truck for 2000 miles over a few months, then pulled and disassembled the engine.

The Dowty washers are the washers that have a rubber ring in the center and seal the main cap cross bolts so oil doesn't leak out the side of the block. I ordered new ones over three weeks ago, and my vendor still doesn't have them in stock. My engine block is on a stand in my living room ready for assembly and I really want to get the Disco running again. Can these be reused as they are almost new, or are they throwaway parts?

I have another thread up about the disassembly, but haven't updated it. Ultimately, the camshaft was wiped after 2000 miles. I decided to check bearings, etc. The previous machine shop had not decked the block properly after installing flanged liners (they used sanding blocks and the surface was not flat), the cam bearings they ordered and installed were incorrect, they charged me $380 to clean the engine and bits, but never even removed the oil galley plugs (instead leaving machining debris in the oil passages), and I could go on. Everything had to be gone over again and my current shop took photos along the way.

Yes they can be reused.

The real question is why are you rebuilding the motor two times in 2k miles?

My monkey has the same problem.

Use blue thread locker on the threads of those crossbolts to seal the oil path. There was a TSB about that for the GEMS engines but I'm sure it carries over to the Bosch blocks.

Answer: he does not have a wife :D

I do have a wife. She is cool with me building an engine in the house. I laid down the law early on. She would just be happy to see the Disco running again.

I hadn't heard of the thread locker on the cross bolts yet, but assume the TSB should supersede the overhaul manual.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't thought of buying washers from a universal vendor. The pressure-sealing washers look very close to the Dowty washers. Since the ones I took off are virtually brand new (the zinc coating is shiny and the rubber is not damaged at all), I may just throw them back on.

Now I don't know what to do. Maybe I will source unicorn jizz and slather it liberally over every threaded faster during engine assembly. Seems about what I need to do with the engine at this point.

Oh sorry, I may have misread that. I thought you were saying that the TSB would mean the workshop manual has been updated. Always follow the TSB, not the manual.
