Replacement for dying Diehard Platinum

Seems my battery is on it's way out. Wouldn't crank after sitting over Thanksgiving and now dropping down to about 10v when sitting overnight. Back up to 14v and all ancillaries work fine immediately after start. Anyhow, it's a Diehard Platinum which is sadly NLA. I'm assuming I'll get some sort of credit at Sears so the question is what should I get? Id like to spend it on another battery there considering all other goods they sell (sans tools) are shit. I may have a winch someday and some aux lighting but that's about as much load as it'd ever be under.

Cheers,

Odyssey is the way to go, in my opinion. The PC2150 is what I would get. They really are tough. I don't drive my truck often but it always starts right up.

The Diehard Platinum replacement (advanced gold?) is a Deka AGM. Probably one of the best battery manufacturers out there IMHO. I have a Bosch AGM because mine died suddenly and it was the best I could get locally. No complaints.

I run wally world batts in my 7.3. It takes 2 being a diesel and 7.3's notoriously kill batteries. They will die in under 36 months which is awesome because walmart warrantees them for 36 months. I just went and got a new pair a few weeks ago and they were both on the 36th month! Free batteries yo.

I have a spare red top optima I'd let go for cheap. Bought about a year ago only used it about 6 months.

Unhooked the battery last night to make sure there's not a drain on it from the Disco itself. Was about 14v when I shut it down last night and 11.6v after being unhooked all night - should a healthy battery hold its full charge (14v) overnight? It dropped to 10.8v overnight when hooked up so I''m going to pick up a multimeter to see if parasitic drain is present

11.5 isn't terrible but I wouldn't call it healthy. Should be 12-12.5. And just because it is 12-12.5 without a load doesn't mean it can do anything when a load is present.

I'm running the equivalent of Oreilly's Super Start Extreme AGM. It's the same battery Auto Zone, Energizer, and a few other brands use as their AGM model. It'll have a black top with a grey bottom with AGM stamped into it. I recently just got a 34 Group Energizer AGM at Sams Club for 149.00 vs seeing it for around 200.00.

It also seems Sams Club is discontinuing selling Optima batteries as they were clearance priced the other day. I was tempted to buy the 1000Amp Red Top for 169.00, but due to the battery terminals being further in I opted to just stick with the AGM one that I've had good luck with so far since the Diehard Platinum series went adios.

optimas suck now. my father in law goes through a red top every other year in his 65 mustang but refuses to buy anything else.

For what it's worth, Group 31 Diehard Platinums (when they were available) were just white labelled Odyssey PC2150 batteries. If you liked the DHP, give thePC2150 a shot.

Battery Systems is my favorite place to buy Odyssey. They're a national chain and have good support and they lent me their terminal crimper so that I could build my own cables.

What Chris said. I literally just went through this with an old Platinum. I really like it and decided to spend the money on the Odyssey. I found one on Amazon and got it shipped for free.

You need a new battery.

I bought my 2003 D2 in 2006 and needed a new battery when I bought it. Dealer put in an Interstate under warranty. Worked great for years.

After about 6 or 7 years I figured it was overdue for a change (I grew up in Minnesota where the winters used to be pretty harsh, I never expect batteries to last longer than 5 years) so I bought the best one that the farm store sold. They replaced that a year later under warranty. And a year after that it was shot again. Instead of taking a crappy warranty replacement, I bought a new Interstate. Been very happy with it.

Just a short follow up on this - did a decent amount of driving last week and haven't had any starting issues. Tested the battery and had very low parasitic draw max of 40mv and then down to 15mv after some of the systems went to sleep. So the battery is going south, albeit slowly. It'll eventually crap out but I'll keep driving it until I get some free time to go exchange it as I have almost a year remaining on warranty.
