I have 04 Disco with 140K miles on it, right rear brake caliper has seized. Whats the best replacement for the money? Do rebuilds last or am I better getting new? If new how does TRW brand stack up to LR? Are they the same?

LR part STC1906 ~ $275 new

TRW W0133-1606625 ~ $100 new

Napa rebuild p/n CAL SE2615A ~ $80

Is the caliper actually seized or are the slide pins just seized? I definitely wouldn't get the NAPA rebuild since its only $20 less than a new caliper. Chances are that the piston is pitted in which case a rebuild wouldn't fix it unless the kit comes with a new piston. Who makes the factory calipers? I would trust a TRW one since that is the OEM for a lot of British cars.

The Napa rebuild in a not a rebuilt kit, but a rebuilt caliper already done

Brake caliper is stamped with Lucas, and from what I can tell TRW bought Lucas

Pins are good, just the hydraulic cylinder is seized

I've been rebuilding them lately . It's a little tricky to get the dust seal and final retaining ring in. But once you do a couple its easier . If you have not ever done something like that I would recomend the TRW new caliper

I've just looked at doing the rears on our 99 D2, we can get new calipers (without the sliding bridge) for around $US 35.00, so not really worth while reconditioning them.

Pistons, seals and pins are also available separately, but by the time you've got your rusty old caliper off the truck, is it really worth it?

The finish on our new ones is Zinc plated.

New discs and flexible brake hoses going on at the same time.

fwiw, find an independent shop that has a worldpac account. we never sell aftermarket parts, BUT worldpac has a brand WBR that sells remanned calipers. we have put some on BMW's, the quality is actually amazing. usually a1 cardone and the napa likes, are absolute shot, they rust up within weeks, and fail after a year. the WBR brand is an american company that ONLY rebuilds OES brake parts.

the BMW ones out of the box are ONLY ATE calipers, they come with the carriers, slide pins, and anit rattle clips even for $100.

DO NOT BUY CARDONE OR NAPA. they are shit. find a shop that can get the WBR worldpac brand, they also have a two year warranty.

nevermind....wbr only has front calipers right now for D2's. if you can get a TRW for a bill, then thats your best option.

STC 1910. always replace these, and use a good grease that does not become a 'paste'.

www.roverparts.com sells the TRW right rear caliper (p/n BHU117) so I bought that. I also bought STC1910 and changed the pins.

Caliper didn't come with 2 new copper crush washers for the banjo bolt, so I just reused the old ones.

No leaks and brakes are happy again.

That drives me nuts when parts come like that. its like getting a water pump without a gasket... FWIW I've re-used those copper washers before and never had a problem
