The Telegraph announced that "Spen" King died today. Apparently he was hit riding his bike by a car. At 85 he had a lot left in him.

Was he the one who 'discovered' the Buick 215cid V-8? Someone from Rover's design department was touring a Mercury Marine boat building plant in MA circa 1966 when they literally stumbled across GM's aluminium block V-8. It was a much better choice than the Rover P-5 engine that was being considered for the "100 inch station wagon" project. And the rest, shall we say, is history.
