Rotted Chassis on 1999 Disco I

Hello.

I recently bought a 1999 Disco I from a scam operation in NJ called Rover Classics Here's how it was advertised: http://www.roverclassic.com/detail.php?item=1645. I'm attaching a video (video wouldn't upload but it reveals the tape and freshly sprayed foam underneath and my brrther poking a hole through it with his finger). and photos so you can see for yourself the actual condition. IMG_1231.jpegIMG_1232.jpegAdvertised as "absolutely no rust”, bought as is and on first drive the steering wheel started to rattle, car wouldn't accelerate, transmission went and I was stranded in the middle of the highway. I had it towed to my brother who is a mechanic and when he put it up on the lift he saw that the frame (back half) was rotted through at the suspension joint. He could stick his finger through it. It was literally crumbling. The seller rigged it with foam spray and heat tape and spray painted it to disguise this.

I was wondering whether it made sense to simply scrap the car for parts or repair the frame. My brother is templating a new frame which he will weld to the part that is still solid. Anyone have experience with this?

Here's the initial diagnosis from the mechanic:

1. Transmission shot. Needs to be replaced or rebuilt.
2. Frame - Back half through rotted at suspension joint
3. Engine runs strong but high miles (170k)
4. Body is very good (except floor panels - can’t remember the word for them - both rotted out and need to be replaced)
5. Exhaust needs work. Muffler and connections rotted through.

Thanks or any advice. This is my first car and I so wanted to love it!

I'd threaten legal action and if that doesn't do it, I'd follow through. This is fraudulent misrepresentation. You shouldn't have to spend more money fixing their junk.

Thanks. I have done all of that. They are a finely tuned scam operation and have stolen money from a lot of people. Unfortunately it's very difficult to recover funds even if the lawsuit is won. The most that can be done is have their accounts frozen but they have figured out a way to work around that by using different bank accounts, . Just hoping to get the word out so no one else is taken by these guys who mostly sell Land Rovers. And lawyers fees are high.

I'm not a lawyer so wont comment further there. It's unfortunate if there's no way forward there though.

Will Tillery is a long time trusted source for used parts such as your problematic transmission. I'd make sure it isn't an XYZ selector issue first.

Rovers North offers Discovery 2 chassis components to consider.
Thanks. I reached out to Will today!

P.S. It's a Discovery 1.

My mistake. I saw it was a 99 and had a rotten chassis. Usually D1 bodies rust out before the chassis, and the reverse for D2s. I'm not aware of any replacement chassis options for D1s, other than used.
My brother is going to weld a patch with 10 gauge hot rolled steel. I'm hoping that will do the trick.

I'm sorry your having to deal with this. These trucks can look great but be rotting from the inside out.

I feel like if your brother can prove that someone went to those lengths to hide a rotten frame someone would be interested in hearing about this. I think if you started bitching to the right people things could get done. They sold you an unsafe vehicle and attempted to hide the fact that its an unsafe vehicle. If NJ has a safety inspection required to sell a vehicle I would be all over that.

I think the secretary of state would be a good start. Push the safety and the shitty repair.

I agree with DiscoStew a claim in court is viable here because of false advertising and fraud also you have your mechanic as witness and pics that speak for themself. i think a Judge will see it your way as long as it’s presented correctly! You should be able to get your money back plus and put these Fakes on Notice!
